BMW introduced the B58 engine in 2016 and has refined it steadily since. Two main generations have emerged — referred to in the tuning community as Gen 1 and Gen 2 — and while they share the same fundamental architecture, the differences between them are significant enough to affect your build strategy.
What is B58 Gen 1?
Gen 1 B58 engines appeared in vehicles from approximately 2016 to 2018, including early G30 530i/540i, G11 730i, F30/F31 340i, and F32 440i. They make 322–382 hp in stock form and use a charge air cooler integrated into the intake manifold. The oil system is conventional, and the turbo sits in the classic top-mount position for this family of engines.
What is B58 Gen 2?
Gen 2 B58s began appearing around 2019 onward in the G20 330i/M340i, G22 M440i, G05/G06 X5/X6 M50i, and others. Key changes include:
- Revised cylinder head — improved port geometry and flow characteristics
- Updated oil system — more robust oil supply under sustained high-load conditions
- Higher stock output — M340i spec pushes 382 hp from the factory vs 322 hp in base Gen 1 applications
- Different injector specification — Gen 2 uses higher-flow stock injectors than Gen 1, but they still have limits at higher power levels
- Revised charge pipe routing — affects which intake and pipe upgrades fit correctly
How the Differences Affect Turbo Upgrades
The good news for turbo upgrades is that the B58's core architecture — block, bottom end, and turbo mounting position — remained largely consistent between generations. This means a properly engineered full frame turbo like the DF-6769 Vortex is designed to accommodate both Gen 1 and Gen 2 B58 fitment.
Where you need to pay closer attention is charge pipe routing and supporting hardware. Gen 2 vehicles may have different OEM pipe diameters and routing, so confirming compatibility before ordering is always wise.
How the Differences Affect Fueling
Gen 2 injectors flow more than Gen 1 stock injectors — but that advantage disappears quickly once you start building power. The DF-S58 injector is specifically designed around Gen 2 B58 fitment and delivers a 30% flow upgrade over stock Gen 2 injectors, giving your tuner the fuel headroom needed for serious power targets.
Quick check: If your B58 is in a 2019+ M340i, M440i, or X5 M50i, you have a Gen 2. Earlier 340i and 440i F-chassis cars are typically Gen 1. Always confirm by VIN if unsure.
Which Generation is Better for Building?
Both are excellent platforms. Gen 2 has a slight edge due to the revised oiling and higher stock output, which gives the tune more to work with from the start. But Gen 1 B58s have been built to 700+ whp reliably, and the block itself is nearly identical. Your power ceiling is determined more by the parts you choose than the generation you start with.
The bottom line: know which generation you have, confirm part fitment, and build accordingly. Both respond extremely well to the same core upgrade path.
